Sri Mulyani Likely to Be Named Central Bank Governor: Presidential Spokesman

The position of Bank Indonesia governor, which has been vacant since Boediono left the role last year to become the nation’s vice president, would likely be filled by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, a presidential spokesman said on Wednesday afternoon.

“Yes, it seems that way,” spokesman Julian Pasha said at the president’s office when asked whether Sri Mulyani was the candidate for the position.

“The president is now considering several names and is in the process of finalizing it,” he said.

“The coordinating minister for the economy (Hatta Radjasa) will announce it today.”

Sri Mulyani has been in the spotlight for her role in the decision to rescue ailing lender Bank Century with a Rp 6.7 trillion ($710 million) bailout in November 2008.

Demonstrators have recently called on the finance minister to step down over her role in the controversial decision. Boediono, who was central bank governor when the bailout was granted, has also faced public criticism.

If Sri Mulyani is named as the new head of Bank Indonesia she will replace Darmin Nasution, who has been acting as the temporary governor.
