“ … Here is another one. A change in what Human nature will allow for government. "Careful, Kryon, don't talk about politics. You'll get in trouble." I won't get in trouble. I'm going to tell you to watch for leadership that cares about you. "You mean politics is going to change?" It already has. It's beginning. Watch for it. You're going to see a total phase-out of old energy dictatorships eventually. The potential is that you're going to see that before 2013.

They're going to fall over, you know, because the energy of the population will not sustain an old energy leader ..."

VP tells ministers and officials not to abuse power

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla has said that ministers and other government officials as part of the bureaucracy must not abuse their power and must help fight corruption.

"We must develop an administration which is able to serve the people, and must not practice corruption and abuse the power," Kalla said here on Thursday before officially opening a seminar on "Corruption Eradication through Bureaucracy Reform."

He cited as an example that tax and customs officers at seaports had potential to abuse the power because clients have to go through a long bureaucracy.

"We know that in the past if someone wanted to work in the seaport tax and custom office, he had to go through a long bureaucracy, get 21 signatures, and probably paid a certain amount of money so that the requests could be fulfilled," he said.

However, at present the bureaucracy had been shortened and authorities were lessen in order to reduce the potential of corruption, he said.

The vice president hoped that government officials including ministers who have high authorities would no longer abuse their power so that corruption in the bureaucracy could be lessened.

He acknowledged that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has taken the right steps either through repressive or preventive actions to reduce corruption cases in this country.

"We shock of what the KPK has done so far, both its repressive and preventive actions. But it`s a good shock therapy, so we have always to be careful," the vice president said.

He said that the state, bureaucracy and economic interlinked with each others. The economic growth will increase if the bureaucracy is effective and efficient.

In the bureaucracy which serves the public, salaries would not increase if there is no economic growth, he said.

Therefore, good bureaucracy must have a clear direction toward the development improvement and good economic growth, the vice president said.

The opening ceremony of the seminar was attended among others by Administrative Reform Minister Taufil Effendi, Political, Legal and Security Coordinating Minister Widodo AS, Chairman of the National Development Planning Board Paskah Suzetta, and National Police Chief General Sutanto.
