Government obliged to disclose public information, minister says

Beginning in April, all government agencies will be obliged to disclose information under the new law on access to public information, Minister of Communication and Information Tiffatul Sembiring said Wednesday.

"Those who fail will have to face legal consequences," Tiffatul said in keynote address to the International Conference of the International Public Relations Association (IPRA).

The law was enacted by the House in 2008 and two year grace period was provided to give the government agencies time to adjust and prepare the mechanism.

Under the law, modeled on the US Freedom of Information Act, members of the public can go to any government agencies and request access to information that is defined as public.
