US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Jakarta this afternoon on a two-day visit for meetings with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda.
She is here as part of a four-nation Asian tour, her first trip since becoming secretary of state and one viewed as a clear signal that US President Barack Obama’s administration is prioritizing better relations with Asia.
Clinton had her picture taken with schoolchildren after touching down at Halim Perdanakusuma airport in Jakarta just after 2 pm. She arrived at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a 4:30 p.m. meeting with Wirajuda. They will hold a joint press conference before Clinton visits the Asean Secretariat and later attends a evening dinner.
Security has been tight at all venues, with multiple checkpoints and screenings. The South Jakarta District Police said 150 police officers were guarding the Asean secretariat building.
On Thursday, Clinton will meet Yudhoyono at the State Palace at 10:45 a.m. They are expected to discuss cooperation in education, climate change and food and energy security.
Wirajuda said Tuesday that he expected his meeting with Clinton to embrace a range of regional and global concerns.
"We are going to discuss our common views and other issues on regional development in Asean and East Asia, as well as the role of the countries in the region in finding a solution to the global financial crisis and other international issues related to the Middle East conflicts, and Iran," he explained.
