The "air bridge" between MidAmerica St. Louis Airport and Hang Nading International Airport, in Indonesia, is a reality.
Mark Kern, the St. Clair County Board chairman, has signed the memorandum of understanding with the industrial authority of Batam, an island known for scores of electronics factories 12 miles off the coast of Singapore. The pact clears the way for direct cargo flights to begin between the two airports -- the only agreement of its kind between Indonesia and a U.S. airport -- though no flights have yet been scheduled.
Kern inked the deal during a meeting at the Indonesian Trade Ministry in Jakarta, late Friday morning Indonesian time, or 10:30 p.m. CST Thursday.
The pact's provisions includes incentives aimed at marketing to the air cargo community, promoting air commerce between the two airports and security needs.
Also signing the deal were representatives of Evergreen International Airlines, an Oregon-based operator of wide-bodied freight haulers, and Cardig International, a Jakarta-based provider of aviation services, logistics, catering and security.
