Finance Asia, a Hong Kong-based publication, on Wednesday (22/03) named Sri
Mulyani Indrawati the Finance Minister of the Year 2017.
Sri was
followed by South Korea's Yoo Il-ho and Carlos "Sonny" Garcia
Dominguez of the Philippines.
The
publication lauded Sri's improvements in the country's tax collection system,
saying the minister has a "stellar reputation" and an
"indomitable work ethic."
Sri
previously served as Indonesia's finance minister from 2005-2010 under
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, before leaving government to take on a role
as the managing director and chief operating officer of the World Bank.
In July
last year, Sri accepted the position to head the Finance Ministry under
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, succeeding Bambang Brodjonegoro after
he left to head the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).
Bambang
jump-started the national tax amnesty program, but Finance Asia said that Sri's
"fearsome reputation" was "undoubtedly crucial" to its
continued success. Indonesia's tax amnesty has been lauded as one of the most
successful programs of its kind, with participants declaring Rp 4,590 trillion
($344 billion) worth of assets previously hidden from government oversight.
