Whistle blower: Let's eradicate corruption

Dina Indrasafitri, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Thu, 12/09/2010

Comr. Gen Susno Duaji, the former National Police chief detective who became a graft suspect and the whistle blower in several cases allegedly involving other police officers and members of other law enforcement institutions, had a few messages of his own on International Anti-Corruption Day, which fell on Thursday.

"Well, don't corrupt," he said during a hearing at the South Jakarta District Court.

Susno is accused of embezzling Rp 8 billion of the money allocated for the regional police to secure the 2008 West Java gubernatorial election, as well as accepting a bribe of around US$500,000 to accelerate the processing of a graft case involving PT Arowana Salma Lestari.

He leaked several names that become public, including that of Gayus H. Tambunan, a former low-ranking tax official who was in possession of billions of rupiah, allegedly from companies wanting to evade taxes.

Thursday’s hearing heard seven former police chiefs from West Java admit that they received smaller sums of money for the 2008 elections than the amounts claimed. At the time, Susno was the West Java Police chief.

"Let's eradicate corruption," he said to journalists when asked to comment on Anti-Corruption Day.

Susno's comments carried a touch of disappointment. "I was the one who uncovered the cases, but now I'm the one to go [to prison]," he said.
