TEMPO Interactive, Mataram: A payment from the mining company PT Newmont in Nusa Tenggara to the Indonesian government in 2008 reached Rp4.215 trillion. It includes the company's entire obligations like taxes, non-tax items, and royalties. The total payment this year increased 83 percent compared to Newmont's payment in 2007.
Newmont's Senior Manager of External Relations, Malik Salim, said the biggest part of the payment comes from the income tax that reached Rp3.57 trillion. “That's because Newmont pays 35 percent for income tax,” said Malik in Mataram, NTB, yesterday.
Malik explained that in the fourth quarter in 2008, Newmont contributed taxes, non-taxes, and royalties amounting to Rp871.876 billion. This increased by 13.69 percent over the third quarter in 2008 which was only Rp767.169. Currently, there are 8,000 people working at Newmont including contractors.
