President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono congratulated Barack Obama after the U.S. senator successfully won the presidential elections on Wednesday.
In a statement delivered at the Presidential Palace, President Yudhoyono went on to congratulate the American public for the successful running of the elections, Antara news agency reported.
"On this opportunity, I would like to congratulate Senator Barack Obama for his success in becoming the President of the United States in the coming term and I also congratulate the American public who have used their political rights in supporting the presidential elections," Yudhoyono said.
Yudhoyono added that he looked forward to enhancing bilateral relations in a just and constructive manner so as to deliver justice and prosperity for both parties under the Obama administration.
Yudhoyono said he was also hoping Obama's connection with the country --Obama had lived part of his childhood in Jakarta--would facilitate the delivery of a new chapter in U.S.- Indonesia ties.
The congratulation address was given right after Senator John McCain conceeded to Obama's victory.
Yudhoyono applauded the political maturity of the American public, which he had deemed politically ethical.
