Yogyakarta, December 18, 2006 (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and the Netherlands signed a letter of intent (LoI) on the mechanism of a dialogue and cooperation here on Monday.
Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda signed the LoI on behalf of Indonesia while the Netherlands was represented by Foreign Minister Bernard Rudolf Bot.
Hassan said after the signing that his meeting with his Dutch counterpart reflected the two countries` resolve to open a new era following the presence of the Dutch foreign minister at the 60th anniversary of Indonesia`s independence last year to express that country`s moral and political recognition of Indonesia`s declaration of independence on August 17, 1945.
He said they had discussed concrete efforts to increase bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues of common concern in the fields of politics, economy, culture and sciences.
He said the two countries agreed to create a mechanism for dialogues to improve the two countries` bilateral relations to establish full partnership in all fields of cooperation.
"The cooperation agreement will later be promoted into a joint declaration," he said.
Dutch Minister Rudolf Bot meanwhile said the LoI would strengthen the two countries` decision to build a full partnership mechanism through dialogues and cooperation.
He also hoped the LoI could intensify the two countries` furhter cooperation in the fields of politics, security, investment, social affairs and culture.
A joint declaration is currently being prepared covering cooperation in the fields of politics and security, economy, socio-cultural and consular affairs and on international issues.
The declaration is expected to be signed by the Indonesian president and the Dutch prime minister next year.
